A Thyristor is a solid-state semiconductor device that controls electric current in electronic circuits. It performs like a switch; i.e., once it is triggered with a gate-signal, it conducts and continues to conduct until the voltage across the device is reversed. Industries where it is used are: Power Transmission and Distribution, Aerospace and Defense, and Consumer Electronics.
A thyristor works as a switch and will remain in the off condition until a small amount of current is applied to its gate terminal. Once this happens, the thyristor is triggered and a larger current is allowed to flow through the device. After it has been turned on, it will stay in this condition, even if the gate current is removed, unless and until the voltage is removed or reversed.
Businesses can use thyristors for controlling or converting electric power. For instance, these can be used to control the speed of motor drives used in production machinery, to regulate voltage in power distribution systems, or to control lighting systems.
Several types of thyristors can be used, such as Silicon Controlled Rectifier thyristors, Gate Turn-off Thyristors, Triode for AC, and many others. The SCR thyristor is the most popular type due to its high efficiency and reliability.
As it is evident from the full form, SCR is a type of thyristor. In other words, all SCRs are thyristors, but not all thyristors are SCRs. The main difference is the controlling mechanism: an SCR thyristor can only be turned on, or ‘triggered’, but cannot be turned off by an external signal – it will turn off automatically when the current flowing through it drops below a certain level.
They will have an opportunity to avail of up to 28% GST benefits, which can be beneficial for business procurement.
As solid-state devices, thyristors do not require much maintenance. However, the device should be operated at the recommended temperature and environmental conditions. Finally, some attention should be paid to the performance of the system periodically to detect possible malfunction.
