The propeller blade’s design largely affects the overall performance of the propeller. The design of each blade, including its shape, size, and pitch, drastically affects just how well the propeller can convert the engine’s power into thrust for the vehicle or vessel. For example, a larger difference in pitch may increase the propeller’s performance at high speeds, but may also decrease the propeller’s ability to move a vehicle or vessel at low speeds or when just beginning to move.
A contra rotating propeller is colloquially known as a twin propeller system and is far more efficient than single propeller systems. This is because a vehicle or vessel using contra rotating propellers has two sets of blades: the first set of blades pushes the water forward, leeching some of the rotation generated by the motor. The second set of blades recovers this lost rotation and actually makes the twin-propeller system more efficient than a single-propeller system; the system also results in more efficient fuel use in the long term.
Pitch is defined as the length of a single rotation of the propeller if, while it were spinning, the propeller moved through a soft solid material like wood. The higher the pitch, the faster the vehicle or vessel will generally go at top speed; in contrast, a higher pitch also means that the vehicle or vessel will have less power at slow speeds and will have more difficulty starting moving. In many scenarios, the pitch is traded off to give the vehicle or vessel the most total performance possible.
