Overview of Turbochargers

Turbochargers are mechanical devices used to boost the engine’s power, without increasing its weight. They are used to increase the airflow into the engine thus increasing the amount of fuel entering into cylinders. The main reason that people choose to purchase turbochargers is to increase the horsepower of the vehicle, thereby increasing the overall performance.

Some vehicles come with pre-installed turbochargers and some are without them. Turbos are comprised of pipes that feed air into it and turbine blades that rotate and feed air into the exhaust. A compressor is attached to the turbo which feeds compressed air into engine cylinders.

How Turbochargers Work?

The engine produces exhaust gases that flow through the turbo, which passes through the turbocharger’s turbine. These gases then spin the turbine wheel which is further connected to the compressor. As the speed of shaft increases, the compressor starts to draw air in.

At the same time, it’s also pushing air out in a way similar to that of a blower. But compressed air is usually heated as the turbo operates on exhaust gases from the engine. To cool down the air, an intercooler is installed next to the compressor.

Then this air makes way for the engine forcing itself into the combustion chamber, which in terms increases the volumetric efficiency of the engine thus improving the power. The turbine and cylinder blades operate at speeds of approximately 150,000 rotations per minute.

In order to withstand such high speeds, turbochargers are often supported by fluid bearings. With this type of bearing, oil is pumped around the shaft in order to decrease friction as it spins. Additionally, this oil also helps to cool down the parts of the turbocharger with which it is in direct contact.

Alternatively, turbochargers can also be held in place with a ball bearing. Turbocharger ball bearings are made from special materials and can withstand such high speeds and temperatures.

Types of Turbochargers

There are three main types of turbochargers: axial flow, radial flow, and exhaust gas.

#1. Axial Flow Turbocharger

In Axial-flow turbochargers, fuel is passed through the turbine in an axial direction. The turbo expands the exhaust to help rotate the turbine’s compressor. Vehicles with wheel diameters of 300 millimeters or higher use axial flow turbochargers.

#2. Radial Flow Turbocharger

Fuel flows through the turbine wheels in the radial direction in radial flow turbochargers and they function in sync with the axial flow turbos. Radial flow turbos operate more efficiently than axial flow turbos.

The former inflicts lower thermal and mechanical stress onto the tips of the turbine than axial turbos. These lower stresses also allow the turbo to carry out the compression and expansion in the same stage. Vehicles with wheel diameters of 160 millimeters or less use radial flow turbochargers.

#3. Exhaust Gas Turbocharger

Exhaust gas turbochargers recycle the vehicle’s exhaust into the compressor to power the turbine. The turbo sucks air into the compressor and moves it into the engine instead of releasing the exhaust into the outside air. This is beneficial to the environment since it reduces the amount of exhaust released.

With the right turbocharger, you are sure to improve the performance of your car. You will find the latest and powerful turbochargers on the online platform at an affordable price. Consult with the authorized car dealer or with your local mechanic to find out the best turbocharger for your car.
