Concrete Vibrators Buying Guide
Last Updated on October 14, 2024
What are the concrete vibrators used for?
Concrete vibrators are of many types, but do you exactly know their use? ? Hundreds or even thousands of air bubbles are trapped when concrete is poured, which may substantially weaken the concrete.I order to remove these air bubbles, concrete vibrators are used. The vibrators will remove the bubbles by vibrating or shaking the concrete that is freshly poured with a mechanical vibrator.
Different Types of Concrete Vibrators:
The three ways of using concrete vibrators are:
1)Formwork Vibration:
To the exterior of the framework, an external electric concrete vibrator is mounted. For precast works, it is recommended that the external form vibrators are placed 6 inches apart.
2)Surface Vibration:
Jumpers or large vibrators are manually put onto the poured surface. When the slab is more than 6 inches, the consolidation process is not useful as they are limited by the depth of the pour. However, these are useful when surface finish is required as they provide a smoother surface.
3)Internal Vibration:
These are the most commonly used concrete vibrators. These are easy to operate as they can be handled by a single operator. There is ease of operation as the worker can quickly put the internal vibrator in the fresh concrete and then slowly withdraw it.
How Much Time Do I Need to Spend Vibrating Concrete?
It is a cliché in the construction industry that most of the concrete is not properly vibrated andair bubbles remain. The best practice is to remove the vibrator slowly from the concrete in order toremove the air bubbles completely. If bubbles can still be seen when the vibrator is taken out, more vibration is required.
It is very important to carry out this task properly as many contractors, due to less time, do not do this properly which ultimately leads to a failure in the structure of the building.
Best Practices
- It is always advisable to have a spare concrete vibrator so that your work does not suffer, if one fails.
- If a stiffer concrete or low slump concrete is used, more vibration needs to be done than regular concrete.
- Vibration can be skipped if self consolidating concrete is poured.
- The concrete vibrator should be inserted close to the vertical to maximize its effect
- Over bending the vibrator may lead to malfunction.
- There should be a minimum of 10 seconds holding time A concrete vibrator should be pulled out of the concrete at not more than 3 inches/second, for best results 1 inch/sec is advisable.
- It should be noted that the head of the vibrator is completely submerged in the concrete.
- Every time the vibrator is inserted, its radius of action should overlap the previous radius of action. A good rule of thumb is that the radius of action is four times the vibrator tip diameter.
- Do not turn on the vibrator until the tip is fully immersed.
- Stop vibration when there is a sheen on the concrete surface.
Choosing the best concrete vibrator
A concrete vibrator is one of the most important power tools. It is always advisable to do proper research before buying a concrete vibrator. Essentially, you need to look into five most important aspects at the time of buying a concrete vibrator, namely: amplitude, power, frequency, size and durability. Your decision on which type of concrete vibrator you need to use depends mainly on your project’s needs.
Budget or affordability is also another factor. You can choose your pick based on what kind of job you are working on. If your project does not involve major concreting, in that case, you may opt for the most external vibrator which will easily solve your purpose. But in case you have a large construction project at hand, such as a big building like a mall or a high-rise structure, then you may require both.
